Uses for barcode scanner?

I am looking for uses for barcode scanner. I was wanting to use it to make a database of both my books and movies (since I have a lot of both). However I was wondering if I could use them for other things like, for instance, keeping track of my coupons (category, expiration etc). When I scan the items whether book, movie, or coupon, will a product name or anything show up? Or will I have to type in all relevant information with it? Is there any decent software out there for barcode scanners that won't cost me $500? Thanks in advance
