Is it illegal to scan ID?

I work as a cashier in a retail store. Sometimes we need to check ID. We can either enter the birth date and wait for a supervisor to OK it, or use the "gun" on the barcode on the back of the id. Someone said it was illegal to scan the barcode. My question is, is it illegal?
