Is it easy to create program for barcode scanner?

Very easy with Java. If you can find a hand-held barcode reader that hooks into the serial port, there are several OpenSource projects that read and print barcodes. Not sure about hooking up a barcode reader to the USB but I'm fairly certain it could be done in Linux because I know how to listen to USB hubs on a Linux box.
