What systems (library/barcode/RFID) are available for tracking business items and files?

I work in a small college where I spend half of my time on wild hunting endeavors for lost, missing, or stored and forgotten objects/files/etc. I am looking for something similar to a library management system, where items can have adhesive barcodes or RFIDs placed on them, and entered into a computer to be tracked. My idea is to buy a library system, and place "library cards" outside of doors to various rooms/filing cabinets/etc. When an object is placed in a location, it will be scanned in, and when removed, scanned to wherever it is taken. Each room would have a card, and each faculty member would have a card. They would register as "borrowers" in the computer, but, we wuold know that the specific item is in that room, or with that person. What is out there that I could do this with, and what kind of prices am I looking at?
